2021 reread: I’ve changed my opinion on Mrs. Montague and I guess Arthur.
They act an instigator for the house to up its urgency to capture Eleanor. Mrs. Montague is introduced as insufferable almost immediately and I think the groups paranoia is warranted. Even after just a week, they’ve been experiencing surreal manifestations. And her insistence on spirits wouldn’t fully explain the things they’ve seen. Arthur is not very important and annoys more than anything else

The sense of atmosphere in this book is strong. Jackson creates a grim feeling throughout and it adds to the spook. I’m surprised I have this a 4/5 before. Upped to 5 as I see myself reading this again. It’s a comfort spooky book for me.

Scary and fun. It’s very well written and a great haunted house story. It was unsettling to read what happened to the characters of this book.

The doctor’s wife and Arthur didn’t really need to be included I think.
