Lipstick Jungle by Candace Bushnell
2.0
Airplane read! Picked this one up because a.) Apollo's Angels was way too damn heavy to bring on a trip and b.) I wanted a light read.
It was light.
I was pleasantly surprised by the number of observations related to gender, money, employment, and the home that were included in this book. Quite often. However, I was disheartened that these observations were still entrenched in gender stereotypes and archaic social norms that pit men and women against each other. Why is it always us vs. them? Why can't it be a thoughtful critique of modern gender roles that includes men and women? Le sigh.
I was also happy to be reading a story where the three main characters are super successful women. However, the definition of success was shockingly limited and the characters were all upper class white women -- I was hoping for a bit more diversity. (I know: it's Candace Bushnell-- what was I thinking?)
My last gripe: the integration of the title into the story. Wayyyy to cutesy for my taste. I love reading a passage and realizing "aaaah, that's where the title comes from..." -- but here, Bushnell whacks us over the head IT'S A LIPSTICK JUNGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET IT? CUZ WE ARE LADIEZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!
Annoying.
