The Eyes Are the Best Part by Monika Kim

3.0

A kind of disappointing thriller- The book’s premise and opening chapters were very promising on the horror/thriller, but much of the ‘scares’ come from the protagonist’s dreams. I’d say 90% of the creepy/gross/gory scenes are from the protagonist’s dreams, and 10% comes during the events unfolding in the last third of the book.
I do appreciate the setup of the protagonist being a bit of an unstable person, which then dominos into her doing worse things later, but the repetitive dream sequences took away a lot of opportunities for her to do more messed up things in-universe.

Also, this book is VERY keen on making a feminist message (which I have no issue with, as it fits the story’s themes), however there’s one part where it feels like the protagonist is talking directly to the reader and giving a ‘women are mistreated in this world and it’s so messed up’ monologue when…it really wasn’t necessary. Most of the book handled the ‘men are mistreating women’ theme just fine without it having spelled out for the reader. It was pretty plain in the text, we don’t need to protagonist to point directly at it.

Overall, not a bad read, although this is much more a thriller than it is horror.
