Venus and Aphrodite: A Biography of Desire by Bettany Hughes

3.0

Audible…
This one was an excellent overview of the goddess Aphrodite. Bettany Hughes reads her own book and does it beautifully. You feel you are walking in ancient Cyprus, Aphrodites home island, amongst the people in lush landscapes, smelling the perfumes the island was famous for.
As in all myths, Aphrodites myth goes back further in history than the incarnation we know now, I liked hearing about that pre history.
While the book is short and Bettany only dips her toes into a huge subject, I thought this was gorgeous. Bettany Hughes has a really good reading voice.
It is very explicit in parts, I had a bit of an embarrassing moment when I started the audible in a busy car park with the volume a bit loud on Bluetooth and a rather vivid description of maleness in ancient art boomed out. You know, when you try and rush to turn it down and the ‘down’ volume button seems to get confused with the ‘up’ volume.
