I love a slow-burn, but this one was a little too slow for me. Overall I thought this book was enjoyable though; I liked the prose and I appreciated the subtle horror of it all, as opposed to any over-the-top supernatural activity. I read a review saying Hill House is much more terror than horror and I think that's the perfect summary. It's much more real and gets under your skin more than an out-and-out ghost story. However, I found the characters to be dull and pretty unlikeable (and not in a good way), and it did feel like a bit of a slog even though it's less than 250 pages.
I'd call this interesting and good on the scale of literary classics I've read (definitely liked it more than We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but I think there are better horror books out there if that's what you're seeking.
