A Single Light, Volume 2: A Thriller by Tosca Lee

2.0

Took me way too long to finish this one because of a lack of personal commute time. I'm just here to say that if you're in the car with your kid for an hour, definitely listen to her and her music and her thoughts about her music-- both the YouTube she's playing and the band camp you're chauffering her to and from. And I'm lucky, because she is a Cool Kid from way back and her current favorite band is Weezer and... I liked them the first time around when I was in high school.

Anyway, that's my favorite memory of this book, which was very uneven-- in pacing, plot, and character development. Every time she wrote a new beat for the first 50% of the book, it immediately explained some other random thing that had had seemingly for no reason and with no explanation. It was like watching a play and mid-way through the set dresser walks onto stage, as the action is happening, and starts to set out random weapons. You know they're there. But... what?

Then, after the 50% point, it was just increasingly improbable challenges around getting the antibiotics. Julie should've totally been dead. No spoilers because I'm not telling you why she needed them or anything, but wow. According to everything she set up, Julie had about 15 minutes to live. Three days later and.... Spoilers: Julie's fine.

The very, very end was interesting, but also a total kick in the pants. Why with Ashley's storyline? Why? I'm not going to write it out because again, spoilers, but if you've read it and are reading this, like, what sense does that even make except you're throwing Deus ex McGuffins at the wall to see what sticks. None.

Aaaaaand there's clearly gonna be a third, but who knows. Bah.
