On Revision: The Only Writing That Counts by William Germano
Did not finish book. Stopped at 15%.
I don’t think the blurb of this book was straightforward enough about the fact that this is about revising scholarly, academic writing. While it does say that the author has given advice on academic writing and publishing for 20 years, it also says that he’s a professor of English literature. And it says that the book “shows writers how to tackle the most critical stage of writing anything: rewriting it with purpose.” I find that misleading because it isn’t a book about rewriting anything; it’s about a specific niche of writing. As a fiction writer, I was looking for some practical advice on revision, and while I thought I might be able to glean some information from this book once I realized that wasn’t what it was about, I found it too focused on scholarly writing to be worth continuing to read. Not a complaint about the author, but more the marketing choices.
