Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart

5.0

One of the most original works I've ever read. I'm going to write a more complete review when I get a chance, but I will say that I loved all the details told off to the side that later become important, the entire background of the tale, how even when I thought I knew what was happening there was much that surprised me (yet felt obvious once I was told), and the characters. I really really enjoyed this book and can't think of anything I've read that's quite like it. I'm trying to fit together names like Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Rick Riordan to try to give a feel for what it's like, but no matter what names I put together it's a puzzle missing a few pieces. I've already started the next book. Excellent.
