Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff
5.0
empire of the vampire is my first ever Jay kristoff novel and without over exaggerating, this was the best book i think i’ve ever read. i finished it a couple days ago and it’s been on my mind ever since, i have so many thoughts and feelings i wasn’t sure i’d even be able to compact them into a written review. but here is my attempt.
the very first couple of pages i did struggle with the way this story is told. the story begins with our main character, Gabriel De Léon, retelling his life story while being held prisoner by the enemy. throughout the book he recounts his story, the pov begins to change to Gabriel’s past, back to present and sometimes i forgot and got confused. however it slowly becomes more apparent and easier to understand when these changes happen, and i began to love the switch between different parts of his life that constantly kept the story going WITHOUT becoming too overwhelming or confusing.
Gabriel’s character is one or if not the most dynamic and loveable main character. you witness his highs and very low lows during his retelling, some lows i myself could never imagine coming back from but he still pursues. he’s also one of the funniest characters EVER. it takes a lot for me to literally LOL while reading and it was a constant occurrence during this, i also saw a bit of my own humour within his which made it even better. the sarcastic, vulgar humour was so hilarious so do be warned as some of it can be quiet out there. also the creativity of some of these insults… had me DYING = “you lackwitted piss-puddle”
he’s also a tall, long dark haired, tattooed, grumpy vampire. like what more could you ask for???
one of the many tropes this story entails is found family, i’m not overly interested in this specific trope but it was executed so perfectly. *SPOILERS* gabriel and Dior’s relationship throughout this story was so beautiful crafted, the constant picking on and bullying each other to then fighting till the death alongside each other was beautiful. i so cannot wait to see it progress even more in the second book, those two really made me smile and Gabriel’s fatherly instincts really had me getting emotional.
if you love vampires, sexy vampires, sexy TATTOOED vampires. this is a book you NEED to read!
10/10, beautiful, magnificent, the best. thank you jay for blessing us with this masterpiece.
