The Lost Cats and Lonely Hearts Club by Nic Tatano

3.0

Whilst I did enjoy this book as it combines my favourite things: cats and romance, there were a couple things that annoyed me. Sometimes the side characters were a bit one-dimensional, for example A.J’s only personality trait seemed to be the fact she was stereotypically Italian. At times it felt like she was just there to be fiery/threatening and cook food.

Also why was the love interest called Nick which is just a variation of Nic (authors name) - It’s giving Jane Austen calling the prettiest daughter in Pride and Prejudice Jane.

There were some inconsistencies in writing, e.g in the interview Madison says she gave Rory first pick of the kittens but actually Rory is the last to choose and ends up with the tabby but is happy because that’s what she wanted anyway.

I would have liked to get to know Madison a bit before she got the kittens - it happened very early on and felt like everyone was telling us how much they had changed her as a person but we never got to see a “before” to witness this change ourselves.

Also, I’m not sure if I just bought an earlier version as I got it from a charity shop, but I noticed a few grammatical errors or typos that should have been picked up in proofreading.

Those points aside, the writing style was easy to follow, chatty, and I enjoyed reading about Madison’s bond with the kittens which any cat owner would see elements of themselves in. I guess my 3 stars are for the cats rather than the characters themselves, although I did like Nick. I knew what I was getting into as I normally love chick-lit, I guess I just would have liked to see a bit more fleshing out of the characters.
