Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay

A book about how it is cool to crack open a cold one with a mate. Some other stuff happens too I guess.

Raced through this (though it is fairly short) and was captivated by the raw yet precise writing style deployed. The removal of the final chapter was a smart editorial choice as far as mystery is concerned, but it feels like the editor had enough sense to leave in enough of the author's manic energy (written in 2 weeks! Insane!) which frequently bubbles to the surface, occasionally boiling over into the stuffy lives of the boarders and their orbitors. The deliberate motifs and carefully intersecting lives of the characters add a sense of calm and composure to the sticky, muddling heat of the Victorian summer and rounds out a tense and enjoyable 250 pages.

I think this is the first time I've expressed sincere thoughts on this app and I will return to shitposting about books for 1 year olds shortly.
