a story of a girl who decided to take the fate of her deceased brother to become something greater than her own fate. she ends up becoming something greater as she goes on a journey to reach the fate she wants even if it’s tough and she suffers through it. there’s another pov in this book from a general that is sort of like her. he wants revenge and is pushed towards his fate by her without her knowing. they have similar paths and identities that have motivated and impacted their journey.

theres so much i could say about the themes of desire and fate in this story as it is such a huge focus in this book, but i am at loss of words currently to form those words. it is truly something that is applied to most of the characters in this book and i think it was incorporated well.

the characters are well written and i really enjoyed their stories. they are complex with their own desires, faults, and anger that power them forward. both are disguised as men but have different views of the world and their situations. though they are more alike in someways then others. they both struggle with their identities and womanhood in a sort of way. their thoughts and experiences with woman are completely different due to how different their outlooks and experiences are.
i truly enjoyed reading zhu’s pov the most, though ouyang’s pov was also really interesting. i didn’t completely like ouyang’s character but i completely get why he is the way he is and the motivations for his actions and thoughts. both of these characters are interesting in their own ways.
- both characters also have love interests that also have povs in this book (though theyre pretty short). both have completely different relationships as their situations differ from both characters. it added more to the story, especially in ouyang’s pov as his feelings toward him come between his plans.

i do recommend this book since the storytelling and plot was really good. i thoroughly enjoyed it. however some parts took me awhile to get through since it didnt peak my interest, but if you like these types of stories i completely recommend it, again.
i honestly dont know if any of this is good but i had a good time reading so!! take it as you wish.
