The Drifter by Nicholas Petrie, Nick Petrie

5.0

Peter Ash returns from his stint as a marine in Iraq and Afghanistan physically whole but mentally a wreck. He has what he calls ‘white static’ which is a buzzing noise, and debilitating claustrophobia due to PTSD. He spends a year just roaming the wilderness and sleeping under the stars until he hears that a fellow marine under his command has committed suicide. Feeling guilty that he didn’t reach out to him when he came home, Ash decides to help his widow and two young sons by repairing their house. As he starts to work on a dilapidated porch, he finds the meanest and ugliest dog he has ever seen, and a bag with lots of cash and explosives. Trying to figure out where the money came from and what the explosives were planned for means Ash must fight his imaginary demons and some very real demons. An amazingly well written thriller highly recommended for Jack Reacher fans. Fast paced, gripping, complex. An excellent book from a very talented new author!
