The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish by Neil Gaiman
4.0
McKean creates dynamic mixed media illustrations that are half puzzle (at least for me as I try to fathom out reasons for why he uses each individual piece of newsprint and why this is photographic and that is abstract). Gaiman's narrative is full of surprise--which McKean in his cleverness helps to build--and quirky humor. I especially love the little sister, who reads very realistically, I think. While the idea of swapping one's father seems fantastical and exaggerated, the concept of elaborate children's trade routes is true to life as well and well-illustrated. This is a book I think children will enjoy immensely, though they may fantasize about similar trades.
