Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

4.0

Sally Diamond is indeed strange, or as her adoptive father would say “socially defective”. But you will be drawn to Sally and her unfiltered honesty as you learn about her very disturbing past. The story of Sally and the people in her past is dark and full of trigger warnings – pedophilia, abduction, rape, abuse, extreme misogyny - `but there is also humor and love and understanding, especially as she comes to really understand who she is. The psychological impact of trauma and the uncertainty of how-to best deal with this is explored in depth. At first I was disappointed with the ending. I guess I wanted it all wrapped up and tied with a bow and for everyone to just live happily ever after, but then I realized that everyone and everything could not always be ‘fixed’. The characters in this book will definitely stay with me for a long time and I will constantly ask what if Peter had done something different after his father died and what if Sally’s adoptive father had taken a different approach when he first encountered her.
