Let me preface this review: I read the prequel (The Origin of an Academy Bully) ahead of reading The Awakening, so I had background on the boys going into this book.
The Awakening immediately hooked me into the present day of the Zodiac Academy world.
Some background: this book is told in 1st person, dual POV—telling the story of two twin sisters that discover they are not humans but, instead, lost heirs to a fae throne. They are taken to the fae world where they must attend Zodiac Academy, learn their power(s), and pass the reckoning so they can claim their throne. The only issue? Four council members have taken power since the throne was thought lost.... and their four hot, a**hole heirs don't want the twins taking their power and throne.
This book is the definition of a bully romantasy. If you don't like bullying in books, you will absolutely struggle to get through this book. The boys, teachers, and classmates are ruthless. Personally, I am happy I chose to read the prequel since I had an understanding for why the heirs behave as they did.
The magic system in this book is dense but really interesting—I feel like I needed to take notes for how much was thrown my way.
Overall, I'm loving the vibes of this series, the writing style, and the different POVs.
