The Heartsick Diaspora, and Other Stories by Elaine Chiew

4.0

Elaine Chiew's first short collection story picked at my heart and unravelled me completely.

These are stories which speak to the most intimate of human longing, desires and wishes. The order of the stories perfectly accompanied a homesick and heartsick me. From Mother's with never ending 'shit' list, layer upon layer of criticisms concealing fear, love and hope, to taking up space in an unexpected vocation.

Notable mentions:
The coffin maker: A Brothers search for his Sister taken.
Chronicles of a Culinary Poser: Choice between silence and Ka-Ching, Ka-ching
Chinese Almanac: living by the book.
Friends of Kookaburra: sometimes friendships breakup and shouldn't be revisited again.
The Chinese Nanny

Some of the stories connected more deeply with me than others, all whilst reflecting on my roots and routes. This short collection steals hearts and took up a lot of my heads pace (in a very good way)
