I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones

4.0

Another Stephen Graham Jones hit.
Once again, just absolutely enamored by his writing style.

I Was a Teenage Slasher feels like a companion novel to his most recent Indian Lake trilogy, a lot of themes and ideas from there continue here this time within the context of nostalgia and this mixture of feelings where we miss the past but also we need to come to terms with it. Recognizing the good and the trauma at the same time and making peace with both.

It's a coming of age tale unlike any other, we're put in the feet of the slasher, the serial killer. In any other hands, this concept could have unfolded in very uncomfortable ways. Instead Jones uses it in a more confrontational, self-reflective way that I'll be processing for a bit. Regret is such a strange feeling, and paired with Guilt it can be quite destructive. The act of reminiscing and nostalgia don't necessarily come with rosy feelings, and I Was a Teenage Slasher takes full advantage of that.
