The Darkest Legacy by Alexandra Bracken

5.0

“We’ve inherited the darkest legacy, but they don’t know that we’ve learned how to thrive in shadows and create our own light.”

W I L D. That is the ONLY way to describe this book. My head is still spinning and I still haven’t fully absorbed everything that has happened in this book.

This review will again be filled with like a million small quotes because somehow Alex has managed to combine everything I’ve loved from each of the previous TDM books and make it into one book. She kept the great character set we had and added great new ones, an interesting story, an awesome kickass main character, a soft boy, and so much action I’m still reeling from it all.

Let me start off with saying one thing first before I explode…WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS A STANDALONE???!!!!!!!!!?!!?!?!?!?!?!! I have SO many questions!!??? You could seriously make 2 more books with the content you have left and I would eat it upppppppp. There’s just not enough…. I know you gave us 600 pages but ITS/NOT/ENOUGH. So I shall patiently await the other 2 books okay thanks :)

Next…when Alex was like aww characters make a cameo in this one….she wasn’t messing around like there were so many cameos or call backs or name mentions and even one particular cameo I did NOT enjoy but okay…It hurt my soul to see what an absolute mess the world was after my children tried so hard to make it all better. I want to bring out a character that broke my heart the most but I simply can’t choose, they actually can’t catch a freaking break and aaaahhh I won’t say more because you just gotta get into this knowing as little as possible about the plot to feel the full effect of it but let’s just say our original gang is having a hard time and made me suffer (as if 3 whole books and 2 novellas wasn’t enough!)

I’ve spend enough time focusing on the old gang but our new characters were just delightful as always and Alex again delivered on one (1) soft boy that breaks my heart. She’s consistent like that thnx. ROMAN VOLKOV IS TOO PRECIOUS SOMEONE PLS TAKE CARE OF HIM!!!!! This dude is so adorable and sad and I just LOVE HIM SO MUCH I wouldn’t even know where to begin to explain how much I adore him. I would just be having an good (stressful) time reading and then he would do something so precious you would forget he probably killed a man 2 pages before.

“Roman, dropping a daisy chain he’d made onto Sasha’s head like a crown. She beamed up at him, the white flowers like stars in her dark hair.”

Look at this fucking asshole being adorable I CAN’T DEAL! He has joined the holy trinity of Soft Boys of TDM. Liam, Lucas and Roman have just raised every expectation for men, fictional and real, ever.

“It’ll only be unbearable when I give up hope of ever getting her back,” she said. “And I won’t. Not ever. My heart is a wheel. It breaks all the damn time, but, most days, it just rolls on.”

“Anyway, I still think you need to hit me,” I said, trying to sound as reasonable as someone could while asking to be punched. “In the eye, and maybe in the mouth to bust my lip open again.”
“Why?” Priyanka said. “Why do you want me to hit your adorable face? Why are you so cruel to me?”

“I gave him a small salute. “We doing this?”
Priyanka shook out her shoulders and arms, then reached for the tire iron resting against the door. “If I fall, avenge me.”

Now it’s time to mention Priyanka, who is such a great character I fell madly in love with her faster than humanly possible and she’s so great I had to include multiple quotes. Vida and Ruby were a great duo in TDM that I couldn’t have gotten enough of even if they had their own 6 book series and Zu and Priyanka were such a quality team filled with enough emotional moments and humour to actually wish sometimes the action would just STOP for one moment so we could have just 8 chapters of them talking.

“If I could call down the lightning and burn out every last trace of darkness for my friends, I would. I would do it in an instant, even if it left me in ashes.”

Finally we have our main gal Zu who I saved for last because oh boy I’ve got lots to say. I gotta admit I did not know what to expect from this book at all seeing as we barely got any Zu in book 2/3 and having her be like a proper YA heroine age was interesting to see. Anyway the worlds a mess and our favourite Yellow Psi kid is just trying to hard to help the Psi kids and have the world not be afraid of them but like people suck so Zu’s got her work cut out for her. Then….things happen and she’s faced with seeing the true cruelty of the world in front of her…AGAIN…like it’s bad enough it was like this before but after the events of ITA it was supposed to be better. It was so easy to slip into Zu’s mind and connect to her voice of storytelling so Alex did a great job in that. I love how her new gang viewed her as the powerful badass instead of the youngest that needs to be protected which the old gang saw her as. I could literally write down at least 200 quotes right now to show you how amazing Zu was this book but it’s an EXPERIENCE you gotta find out yourself. I’m too bad with words to properly explain how much I loved this book and her characterisation. I LOVE IT IT’S AWESOME READ IT AND BE AMAZED AT HOW GREAT IT ALL IS!

That’s it. That’s all I’ve got to say (just kidding I have so much more to say that I feel as if I’ll explode but I shall contain myself).

This was great Alex pls write more *shoves money at you that I don’t have*
