Julia by Sandra Newman

4.0

If you've read 1984, you'll know the story. It's great to see a retelling of it from the POV of Julia, who's a survivor no matter the circumstances, versus Winston who easily succumbs.

The scene with Winston in Room 101 where he screams "DO IT TO JULIA!" was done so well from Julia's POV. SHE BIT THE HEAD OFF OF A RAT. Felt like she was doing it to Winston.

The story is bleak, and there are no happy endings. The realization as Julia sat on what was assumed to be the side of people fighting the Red Party, and being asked the exact questions she was asked with Winston? Brilliant. There's no choices but to continue to survive, or give in and give up, and if the story proved anything it's that Julia doesn't give up.
