The Orphan of Destiny, David Hall by A. J. Knight

5.0

This was such a fun urban fantasy. I don’t read a lot of fantasy because I struggle with the world building, but I have found that urban fantasy is something that is much easier to wrap my head around. I didn’t have to think very hard about this one because the author laid things out so nicely and wonderfully explained what I needed to know and what was relevant to the story. I felt such a connection to the main character right from the start because of his horrible household conditions.

The first half of the book was dedicated to getting to know our main character, David Hall. I loved it and really enjoyed being fully immersed in his life. Even the side characters were well developed and added a lot to the story. There are quite a few side characters, but be patient, it pays off.

The writing style was descriptive without being overwhelming. The pacing was nice, things moved along nicely without feeling rushed.

After about the halfway point things really took off. All of a sudden, the side characters started clicking and made sense in a way I didn’t see coming and I loved every second. Even though the pacing was well done in the first half, it picked up a notch in the second half and I felt like we were off to the races. I didn’t want to put this book down. For being an almost 500-page novel, I devoured in a day and a half because I just needed to know what happened. The magic flowed flawlessly with the theme of the book, and I didn’t feel lost reading it.

I highly recommend this book for those who love good urban fantasy books, especially those surrounding the use of magic.
