Elena: A Hand Made Life by Miriam Gold

5.0

What a gorgeous tribute to a remarkable woman.

Elena is remembered as extraordinarily accomplished and brave in the grand arc of her life, but also in the small everyday details - smocking patterns and fabric conditioners and cups of tea. The beauty of which Gold captures masterfully in a collage that flows over page and weaves between decades. (Material historians eat your heart out!!!)

My favourite (most devastating?) pages were the “to-do lists” of the author and her grandmother laid side by side. But a special mention to Elena sombrely explaining to her granddaughter the punchline of her sex jokes.
