This book was recommended to me as a former journalist who is concerned about gender inequality and imbalances of power in the workplace. However, as a consumer and not a member of the entertainment industry, I was not emotionally invested in this particular narrative. I know it is corrupt, and listening to 14 hours of abuse stories was overkill for me. However, I do commend Maureen Ryan’s journalistic writing. Although she sometimes used simplified phrases such as “not good,” Ryan is an excellent wordsmith and I felt that I learned more about the movements to improve the issues of meritocracy, abusive working conditions, unfair wages, and other systemic problems in the entertainment industry.
