Superman: Funeral for a Friend by Dan Jurgens
3.0
Admittedly, it’s been a while since I’ve read the predecessor, The Death of Superman, but there are still a lot of questions that aren’t answered all that well. Why does Lex Luthor have a gorgeous head of red hair and a matching beard? Easy, that’s the illegitimate son of Lex whom he had swapped brains with after his death. Also he’s Australian. Why is Supergirl dating Lex Luthor? Obviously that’s not really Supergirl, that’s a shapeshifting alien named Matrix from a different dimension, and she only looks like Supergirl because Lex is trying to build an army of them. Who are a lot of these other superheroes that seem really invested in Superman’s death? Clearly that’s Gang-Buster, Guardian, the Thorn, Waverider, and the Newsboy Legion. Wait, is there a society of mutants living under Metropolis? Of course there is. You haven’t heard of the Underworld? Anyway, lots of rabbit holes to go down for anyway who isn’t as familiar with the comic book world’s convoluted history. This run feels like peak 90s comics, but in a bad way. A bunch of forgettable and overly complicated characters and plot lines, melodramatic dialogue, and a constant feeling of “what am I looking at?”
