King of Death by Lily Mayne

5.0

I am again just astounded by the storyline, detail and imagination put into this series. It boggles my mind how underrated this story is. It has been quite some time since I read Forgotten Vows but I was able to fall directly into King of Death with no issue as if I read FV just yesterday.

There are a lot of emotions in this book, and while it is rare for me to feel what the characters do while I’m reading I definitely went through the spectrum during this story. Not many authors can make me feel this and I always consider it a mark of true genius when it happens (which I already knew about Lily Mayne). We already knew prior to KoD that the Carlin was awful, but we didn’t know how truly heinous she was. My heart broke for what Lonan lost and never got to experience, as well as some side characters whose identities I will keep secret.

Ash struggles with acclimatizing to Kinghood after everything else he went through in Mortal Skin and Forgotten Vows. He does learn alot and has a great growth arc but he makes mistakes along the way, some of which are hard to witness. Luckily he has a great support system not only with Lonan but with Nua and Gillie.

The amount of growth both characters make throughout the series is tremendous, but for Lonan especially it is very noticeable. From being manipulated, tortured, and abused his entire life to free of his mother and brothers and eventually King of the Unseelie and HAPPY. There is an HEA for both our guys but they definitely had to work hard for it over the last 3 books.

My petty, black little heart was so happy with all the vengeance dished out. I would definitely be mindful of the TWs at the beginning of the book as there is definitely violence.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
