When You Wish Upon a Star by Elizabeth Lim
5.0
They say fairies cast a spell over the family. Over the whole town. They either make you think she's dead, or they make you forget her completely."
This is the Blue Fairy's story. Well a version of what it could be, rather.
This book starts off with the Blue Fairy granting Geppetto's wish and bringing pinocchio to life. As a good fairy she is to adhere to a certain set of rules. One being that you can never grant a wish for someone you once knew in your past life (a friend or family member) and another being that you cannot bring anything to life. It upsets the order and blurs the lines. She broke those two rules in one moment where she saw someone so deserving of having their wish come true and she feels the guilt and is ready to confess. On her way she runs into the Scarlet Fairy, her sister, a member of the heartless. Then we are shifted 40 years into the past.
This is where we get to learn about Chiara, the Blue Fairy, as a human and follow the events that led her to being offered to essentially go to "fairy school" to see if this is the path that she wishes to go down. We learn that Chiara saved Geppetto after the monstro, the big whale, destroyed his boat and this caught the attention of the fairies. They believe her heart and the things that make her who she is, is fairy material and they offer up the opportunity to become one of them. Before she accepts the offer of attending this trial period she is asked to keep it a secret from everyone until she makes her decision. They don't want anyone to persuade her decision, it's something she needs to decide on her own. Ilaria, the future Scarlet Fairy, saw Chiara talking with the fairy and knew something was up, but Chiara kept true to her word and didn't speak about the conversation. This is where the ridge starts to form between the two sisters and Ilaria really let's jealousy get to her.
When the truth is finally told and she learns that Chiara is being offered the chance to be a fairy it gets even rockier. Ilaria throughout the story really shows herself as a very jealous and selfish person. Where Chiara would kind of help steer her more on the right direction, she isn't there and she just keeps going further down into darkness. She was experiencing so much heartbreak from her sister's absence and just didn't know how to handle it.
Elizabeth Lim's writing style really has the ability to write a villain where you really hate them, but also care about them so much.
I adored this book, I was on the edge of my seat devouring the words and the potential backstory for the Blue Fairy and when the harder parts came it was like being hit with a wave emotions and I just felt everything.
