Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett
5.0
Onyx and Ivory took me by complete surprise! For the past month or so, I’ve been in a major reading slump, but the moment I picked this up, I knew it would be my savior. I don’t know why I put it off so long!
The writing is pleasant without being overly descriptive and lyrical. The main and supporting characters are all unique, complex, and full of emotional depth, and the relationships between them properly developed. I was absolutely enraptured by the world and magic system. It was all so well built; I was absolutely blown away that so much world-building could be accomplished in a first book. This entire book was such a breath of fresh air among YA Fantasy, my personal favorite genre. It has been too long since I read something that captivated me so. Can’t wait to read the sequel! (Luckily it’s sitting upstairs as we speak, so... *proceeds to frantically scurry up the stairs*)
