This was truly amazing. I totally forgot how funny and addicting these books were! I think I might need to do a re-read, possibly adjust some of my ratings, because this fourth book? It was just my jam.
I had forgotten quite a bit of what happened in the previous books, but thankfully S.E. Harmon has revealed herself to be quite a magician at briefly summarizing all the important bits. I still need to do a re-read though!
Anyway, I managed to remember a lot quite easily and best of all, I managed to fall head-over-heels in love with both Rain and Danny all over again.
I also had forgotten how hilarious Rain's narration was: his inner thoughts, the way he talked and joked and interacted, had me cackling from start to end. Needless to say, he's still my favourite. He's hilarious and quirky and although he's put through the ringer this time around, he still manages to keep his smile: he was an utter joy to read about. I was also surprised by how much I loved Danny: don't get me wrong, I remember liking him and him and Rain together, but I had also totally forgotten how deliciously bossy he was?! How swoon-worthy and protective and ugh, just so lovely. Their romance was by far one of my favourite parts of the book: they know each other inside out, all their quirks and flaws and insecurities, and the care and affection and love and chemistry between them was just perfect, truly top notch stuff.
And the story was freaking amazing too: mysteries with a dash of paranormal (especially of the ghost variety) are my latest obsession and I literally could not stop reading this book. The murder mystery (or should I say, mysteries) was so complex and so satisfyingly full-circle: everything, every small clue, is connected and when I reached the big reveal near the end I gasped.
Out loud.
It was so, so good. The ghosts this time around were creepy and terrifying in the worst (and best) way possible: Rain is put through some pretty horrific stuff and I spent the last chapters of the book with heart palpitations.
The ending was perfect. I have some very minor complaints about how some stuff was handled ( especially in regards to Rain and the very obvious trauma he goes through when Hannah takes over his body: I was expecting a few more pages spent on that and his recovery and how Danny reacted to everything. ), but all in all"The Spooky Life" was a truly fantastic read.
100% would recommend.
Thank you GRR for the ARC. I received it in exchange for an honest review.
