The Forester's Daughter by Claire Keegan
3.0
I don’t quite know what to think of this short story. I love Claire Keegan’s works, but this is the first one I read and did not feel this impact at the end. I felt it in the middle, thought the story to become more feminist because Deegan definitely is a sloth in terms of relationships and caring .. But this end, I don’t quite know. I mean, everything is up for grabs, what the characters will choose and all. The writing was beautiful though and I like how Keegan switches between povs so effortlessly in her storytelling. The girl was definitely the smartest of the children, but I found Martha nor Deegan to be characters I sympathised with. So much went wrong between those two and yet, noone changed a thing. Martha had the means and still chose not to - okay, she has the kids - and Deegan was just a fool only caring about his damn house. I mean, yeah, there is a message in the end, which is a true one, but still, the story unfortunately did not grab me as I had hoped. Still, any fan of Claire Keegan’s should read this, because it is definitely not bad. It is one with twists and different outlooks on and morals in life. Plus, the edition is super cute.
