I'm So (Not) Over You by Kosoko Jackson
2.5
only took me 17 days to finish.... i was originally going to finish this in 4 days or less bc i picked it up as just a light-hearted read to pick up a heavier book but it was just... so full... of pop culture references that I had to take a break every other time a pop culture reference appeared. And each time, I was internally screaming "SHUT UP. STOP. JUST STOP." I'm neutral on pop culture references on books, sometimes I see a show or movie I love in a book and that's always fun to see but this is overkill. It's like a game of "How many pop culture references can you put in a book?" It was horrible. Horrible!
But the pop culture references weren't my only problem, no sir, of course not, I wouldn't be so cruel to give it a 2 star just bc of that. The main characterprogressively got unbearable as we got closer to the end. It felt like the author was trying too hard to make him likeable that he ended up being pretentious. Maybe if it wasn't written in Kian's point of view, It would feel more authentic how everyone loved him but reading about his interactions with the other characters, I just wanted him to shut up. I kept wondering how the hell does he make everyone like him because reading his thoughts made me want to rip my hair out. Like, I understand why everyone likes him but when you know what happens behind the scenes, it makes you wonder just HOW. I'm curious as to how this book would've turned out if we read it in Hudson's point of view but that would probably be harder as Hudson is attractice and rich and would probably annoy me more reading about how just because he's rich doesn't mean he has it easy.
Hudson and Kian's relationship did nothing to me. They had chemistry! But there were so many scenes where they're both annoying and all I could think was "I hope they broke up permanently and just be miserable." And, mostly, the chemistry I'm talking about is how compatible their bodies are. It sounds like they have great sex but remove the sex and watch how much their chemistry just disappears.
In conclusion, Jamal best character. Deserved more screen time at least.
Note: I just want to ask if we ever found out why Hudson broke up with Kian because quite frankly I was just angry skimming-reading the last few chapters. It was a big part of why I didn't drop this book and I never even got the answer.
