Louise La Blanc is a witch, hiding from her coven in a town where magic is feared. The Church protects the town from the witches through witch hunters called Chasseurs. After a stunt gone wrong, Reid Diggory, the Captain of the Chasseurs, finds himself married to Lou. With Lou's past coming back to haunt her, Reid must decide whether or not to protect her or let her burn.
I loved this book with my whole heart. I expected to like it, but definitely not as much as I did. Right from the beginning I was hooked not only on the story, but also the characters. I loved the world building and magic system in this! There were so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. The entire book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, it was so addictive! I loved the war between the witches and the Church. There wasn't a clear side to root for, they both had their flaws and valid reasons for fighting one another and I really enjoyed that.
Lou is probably one of my favourite characters I've read to date. She is sassy and fierce and I loved her so much. I loved how she puts on a brave front but she also has her fears and is extremely vulnerable at the same time. The alternating point of view really drew me in. I had no idea we would hear from Reid's perspective when I initially picked up the book, but I think it really added to the story overall. I loved Reid's growth and development in the end and I'm glad he learned to think for himself rather than taking everyone else's views as gospel. I loved the slow burn enemies to lovers in this. The banter between Lou and Reid is hilarious, I loved the tension between the two and I absolutely adored them together. I also want to mention two of the side characters who really shone during this book. First, Ansel, my sweet little cinnamon roll. He was so loyal to Lou and just an all around sweetheart. I loved him so so much, I want to protect him at all costs and I really hope we see more of him in the sequel. And then Coco, Lou's best friend, is another fierce female badass. I loved her friendship with Lou and I can't wait for the second book since we'll hopefully be focusing more on her and her power with her Aunt's coven.
I am BEYOND excited for the sequel, it can't come fast enough.
