As I do every time I'm about to write a book review I went back to my favorite passages for inspiration, and instead got a good cry.
I can't really say anything that will do Hamnet justice. Maggie O'Farrell has written a true work of genius, I've never read anything like it. Have death and grief ever been written about this beautifully? With such lyricism and compassion? To think that Hamnet, the real Hamnet - who until now had been relegated to a footnote, reduced to the fact of his death - has been brought to life in this book with such tenderness and skill... Ah, here come the tears again.
