Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
5.0
I've been seeing this book everywhere lately and now I know why! This short book is packed with a thought-provoking story.
I first learned of Magdalene Laundries in the movie Philomena. I didn't realize the last one didn't close until 1996.
This story takes place in 1985 which still feels too modern for such a horrific and barbaric system to be in place. (Then again, horrors abound everywhere still today so should I really be surprised by this? Likely not.)
What is so touching about this story is the effect and heroism that everyday people can have. While it might be difficult and it may invite a lot of discomfort, doing what is right is needed.
