Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay
4.0
As a latecomer to horror, I always find it funny when the horror novels I enjoy most are the ones that many avid horror fans find unsatisfying or frustrating. I can completely understand the reasons this novel's detractors didn't like it, but most of those are the reasons that I did.
Horror Movie shares a lot in common with [b:Night Film|18770398|Night Film|Marisha Pessl|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1397425352l/18770398._SY75_.jpg|15182838] by Marisha Pessl, and to a lesser extent, [b:My Heart Is a Chainsaw|55711617|My Heart Is a Chainsaw (The Indian Lake Trilogy, #1)|Stephen Graham Jones|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1623264202l/55711617._SY75_.jpg|86884065] by Stephen Graham Jones. I don't think it's as good as either of those, but I've always been drawn to the Russian doll style of horror stories because of the way it makes us think about the function of fear and horror stories in our world.
I have criticisms of this book (including the baffling audiobook choices during the screenplay sections, seriously, can anyone explain that), but overall it was incredibly compelling and enjoyable. And if you know me, you know how much I love a good ambiguous...everything.
