Rereading this I found the ages of everyone hitting me so much harder.
The immaturity of the Magi and lack of emotional control was very frustrating for the most part, and then I would remember that they are legitimately teenagers. I sympathise with them and understand that there isn't any Magi adults to teach or lead them so they had to step up and do it themselves. After years of discrimination and the trauma of the slaughter of their people, I can understand their hostility towards Amari but I think I was more upset at Zélie's treatment towards her. After everything she went through with Amari in the first book, she more or less tossed her to the side and saw her as the enemy once she was with other Magi. She turned Amari from Amari to another royal in her head and it really hurt to see that.
I understand it is that lack of emotional maturity and trauma that makes her act this way and not be able to face Amari or sympathise with her and see that she is trying to help. It just had me yelling that we need an adult to knock some logic into everyone, but I believe that was part of the point of their stories.
It is well written and our characters are not perfect. They are teenagers, they are emotiona, and all of them have gone through traumatic events that have impacted and changed them. These are not the same characters from the beginning of book 1, but they are also not the same characters from the beginning of book 2 by the end either.
I cannot wait to see how they continue to grow by the end of book three and see how this trilogy concludes their stories.

This is an amazing read, and now I shall wait for the third book.
This book hits the ground running. There is so much going on when reading. The drama, betrayals, and the fights this book has and even the series as a whole so far is just ahh. I love every moment of it. The plot carries on from the first book along with the character growth, which is just perfect.
I cannot wait for the third book. I highly highly recommend reading this series.
