Set in the Dominican Republic, we follow four sisters from the 1940s to 1960s as they grow up together in a country ruled by General Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship. However, by the 1990's only one sister survives to tell their harrowing story as the enemies of an evil dictator. The women's strength in the face of adversity lends to a beautiful tale.

This historical fiction was really great, I loved that we got all the sister's POVs and over different time periods. I did find it hard to get through the long chapters sometimes. But my favorite parts were at the beginning because the girls were so young and carefree, those moments felt like the definition of girlhood.

I kind of wish I didn't know the ending to the story and it was more of a mystery of what happened, but you know what is going on, once you read the synopsis. There wasn't much intrigue to keep me reading, besides caring for the characters. I loved the beautiful writing, and I think the character work was superb.

I recommend this one, if you love historical fiction. This story is based on a true story and I had never heard about it before reading this book.
