Alright guys this review has no structure whatsoever and is RIDDLED with spoilers, being the last book in a series’ it’s impossible for me to write this without them.
✨✨✨
“Shadow & Storms,” the fourth book in Helen Scheuerer’s The Legends of Thezmarr series, kicks off just two weeks after the third book, with Wilder stuck in the dreaded Scarlet Tower. Thea suddenly having what appears to be full control over her powers felt a bit off, especially since she lost them before and struggled with control earlier. Her realization of only having a year left to live added a heartbreaking touch to the story.
Seeing how Naarva has grown since “Slaying the Shadow Prince” was really cool, even with the brief explanation. Malik’s character, despite not speaking much or being around often, had such a surprisingly strong impact for myself and I found myself moved to tears. Honestly, this shows off Scheuerer’s writing skills - how she writes these characters is truly my favourite thing about this series!
The reunions were tear-jerkers, especially when Audra got her dagger back and when Kip and Cal celebrated Thea becoming a Warsword. These moments added depth to the character relationships even though they were all primarily side and background characters.
The story seems to be setting up for “Iron and Embers,” with new prophecies and visions involving characters like Torj and maybe Wren. Torj’s obvious feelings make me SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK! I already ship this pair HARD and so many of my favourite moments from this book involve these two.
Sebastian’s death was satisfying and felt overdue. However, Kip’s brief death lacked emotional punch because it was clear he’d be back quickly. Audra’s path, along with the ex-women warriors of Thezmarr, was somewhat predictable as well, although, it still had me in tears of happiness and moved me greatly.
The story covering a whole year felt rushed, with time and training passing by too quickly. The reveal about Jasira, though expected, was handled well. I was JUMPING with joy when I realised I had guessed this correctly the entire time!
This huge and final battle which had been built up over four books, ended too quickly, making the climax feel underwhelming. While the series wrapped up nicely, leading into Wren and Torj’s story, the final battle’s brevity left me a bit disappointed. ESPECIALLY considering the arrival of the Furies themselves?
Overall, “Shadow & Storms” is a gripping continuation of the series, with emotional highs and complex character dynamics. I am so happy I decided to binge this series and buy trophy copies for my bookshelves!
