The Elric Undoing by Cassandra Celia

dark mysterious sad tense medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
I couldn't put The Elric Undoing down; it kept me on the edge of my seat with its suspenseful, lyrical, and compelling narrative.

With captivating prose, The Elric Undoing unfolds as an unsettling feminist horror set in a mysterious, secluded town. The writing is easy to follow and transportive, with scenes rich in disturbing images of chilling apparitions.

The story centers on Pyet, a woman shaped by isolation, trauma, and emotional distance, who longs only to feel a sense of belonging and love. Pyet experiences anxiety and panic attacks, and Cassandra Celia addresses these issues with sensitivity and finesse.

The cult-like town of Elric is steeped in rich history and lore, its atmosphere thick with menace. The distinctive characters are cold and dangerous, bound by their ties yet distrustful of outsiders. With a sentient manor where Pyet lives and vengeful, ghostly tenants, nowhere in Elric is safe. The subtle magic adds an eerie layer to this chilling horror.

As the novel progresses, it gradually reveals the answers to its central mystery, leaving the final revelations at its ambiguous conclusion. With themes of feminism and a deep longing for love, The Elric Undoing offers a suspenseful narrative filled with frustrating characters and a main protagonist you can't help but root for.

I would recommend The Elric Undoing to other horror readers.
