"All things being equal, we'd shout it from the rooftops."
But the world is not equal, which sets the tone in This Is How It Always Is.
I've heard so much good about this book, and now understand why.
From the first page, I fell right into Laurie Frankel's writing. It's powerful, captivating and wry.
The Walsh-Adams family has five children, born as boys. The youngest, Claude, expressed a different gender identity from an early age.
Readers are taken through the story of becoming Poppy, and family's support and struggle to have Poppy accepted in a world that doesn't always tolerate differences.
It's a story that's eye-opening and heartbreaking; about learning and loving through mistakes and choices. So much of this book can resonate with all of us, regardless of ever being in a similar situation.
"The real trick is you have to forge your way straight ahead through the trees where there is no path."
