Happy Place by Emily Henry
3.0
I've liked every Emily Henry book I've read so far, but this one missed the mark for me. It sort of put me into a reading slump; I wasn't feeling the tension or was wishing for the moment Harriet and Wyn got back together, but merely followed along with the words on the page. I think maybe the issue was that this book is very character driven and I prefer for more plot driven stories. I'm glad I was warned about the constant miscommunication before I started reading so I wasn't as irritated or taken off guard about it.
I felt as if I didn't get to really know the characters - maybe there were so many of them to follow that I got lost in their respective problems and storylines. The writing was great, exactly what I expect and like from Emily Henry. I did feel as though Harriet, as the narrator, isn't that different from the protagonists in Henry's other books.
The pottery scene towards the end was really good, but besides that, this book just didn't make me feel as much as Beach Read or Book Lovers did. I'm waiting to buy Funny Story until it comes out in paperback, but I'm hoping to enjoy that one more. I really think Happy Place following six characters made them each lack some depth for me.
