Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

adventurous funny lighthearted

4.5

As a massive fan of the Studio Ghibli film adaptation, I was extremely excited to read the source novel—understanding that there would be some differences. With this in mind, I had a ton of fun with this book!

It’s definitely a story catered to younger readers, with accessible language, simplistic plot points and a very quick and cheesy love story. Even still, I appreciated the world the author built and the ease with which I could settle in without confusion.

Howl being from the real world (Wales!?) really threw me for a loop, but I liked the concept of the alternate worlds and Howl escaping his boring suburban lifestyle to be the dramatic, heartbreaking wizard we know him to be.

If you’re a fan of the movie, I definitely think this is worth a read. The differences are obvious, but it’s all familiar enough to enjoy.
