A Heart That Works by Rob Delaney
5.0
Wow. Really well-written and edited book.
I read it in one sitting and found it profoundly touching, painful and funny. Delaney and his family go through several awful experiences in the course of the book. The central tragedy is the loss of their little boy, Henry, to brain cancer.
He skillfully lays out the experience and helps you feel all the strong emotions of the experience. One of the ways he does this is by focusing on the experience of Henry’s diagnosis, illness and death. There are certainly other events during this time period, but they’re all seen with relation to Henry.
Unlike other memoirs I’ve read, this one knows what it needs to say, says it, and is done. And you feel like you understand a bit of the pain of the whole experience.
Highly recommend.
