Read This to Get Smarter: about Race, Class, Gender, Disability, and More by Blair Imani
4.0
Read This to Get Smarter is the modern day primer of the "hot button" topics that persist in society today. The book is broken up into six chapters on identity, relationships, class, disability, race and racism, and sex, gender, and sexual orientation. At the end of each chapter is a series of reflection questions; this is where the real work starts to happen.
While the topics covered in this book are nuanced and have far more detail that what fits into the book, Imani provides enough detail to allow the reader to start asking questions about their own understandings. The writing isn't judgmental and while Imani sprinkles in her life experiences or own understandings of the topics, it is written from ubuntu in that Imani is acknowledging the humanity of her readers.
Overall, I gained more from the reflection questions than the actual text but I think that's because I've been on a learning journey for a few years now (which I will forever be on) about all of these topics. However, I would still recommend this book to anyone who wishes to get a little bit smarter in understanding the world and those around them.
