A Life Complete: Emotional and Spiritual Growth for Midlife and Beyond by Sallirae Henderson

4.0

I only read the "emotional" not the "spiritual" chapters but i thought this was very good and thought provoking. sort of a standard self help book about accepting rather than running away from your negative qualities as a first step to making positive change, being present in the moment instead of always living in the future or the past, appreciating the good in life instead of focusing on the bad. but the emphasis on doing these things specifically as preparation for aging & dying made it feel fresh. as someone who is now, if all goes well, just starting the second half of my life, it felt useful.

the thrust is: you won't suddenly become wise when you are an elder. plenty of elders die without dealing with their shit or learning the lessons life is teaching them. you don't want to end up in a nursing home with no one to visit and terrorizing the nurses aides. you want to end up in a nursing home still making new friends, keeping in touch with old friends, with habits of mind & body that nourish you. so start now becoming the kind of elder you want to be.
