Porter's Lodge by L.T. Brady

Update: I'm looking forward for the rest of this story, I'm invested in its mysteries.

I usually don't mind a simplistic magic system and don't get why it is such an issue for some people, but this time I do. There is no explanation for the limits of the use of magic except that you can exhaust your reserves if you abuse it.

When I finished it I was kind of confused as I didn't understand how something was solved and as I got to the epilogue I noticed that it wasn't and it's a mystery to be solved in the following installments.

As I mentioned in my previous review, I think the characters are this book's forte and even when you don't get to know a lot about them, they stay true to themselves. As for the main character, Brendan Campion, I still like him but I see him more as a relatable asshole.

I'm starting to recommend this book as I really want this story to be finished.

Actually I haven’t been able to finish this book, but I committed to write a review as I was able to get an ARC, but I promise to edit this as soon as I get to the end.

I feel the need to clarify that I’m really liking this book (hence the 5 stars), and for a new author this feels professionally written. I’m getting some Ursula K. Le Guin and Gillian Flynn feels.

I loved how she got to describe the political situation without the need of a narrator and in a very simple and plot connected way. I still don’t get how the magic system works, but hope to find a little explanation later.

This is the first book in a saga but you can tell this is not the beginning of the story, there’s so much going on and the past of the characters plays a big role in the development of the story.

For a fantasy book it has a lot of drama, where the magic is not the main subject, but what the characters are going through and I think this is its strong point.
