Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence by Anna Lembke
Did not finish book. Stopped at 16%.
This book gave me the ick from page 1.
The author makes a lot of problematic statements in the 50 pages I read. For a scientist, comes to some very strange conclusions based on limited data, saying trigger warnings and safe spaces are ‘coddling’, implying that the occurrence rates of hypertension and high cholesterol are solely due to overeating, implying the pain epidemic in the USA is due to people ignoring their pain and not restricted access to healthcare, and mocking a foreign client’s accent. I can’t imagine the amount of fat shaming that’s lurking in the remaining 250 pages I didn’t read. It also felt very problematic, unethical, and unprofessional how she expressed her disgust with her patients.
This very much comes across as a boomer doctor complaining about kids these days not being able to deal with anything. While I understand the core message of trying to hunt for dopamine to avoid emotional pain, it’s executed in poor taste. And not just because she compares her own habit of reading romance novels to actual drug addiction….
