These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner
5.0
It was so nice to have a book I was excited to come back to between readings, one that made me feel something for the characters, one that I was actually a little sad when it came to a close (although this is a trilogy, the story shifts to new characters for the sequel, although there appears to be some tie-in at the end).
This came across one of the "deals" booklists, on sale for $.99. I have SO many books in my Kindle Cloud that I try to resist buying, but with the good reviews, and this not being available digitally from my local library, I decided to go ahead (I mean, $1 ...) For some reason my Amazon account was acting up and I had some difficulty completing the purchase. I'm a little surprised I didn't just give up, but I'm glad I didn't, as I thoroughly enjoyed this read!
Each chapter begins with an italicized interrogation of Tarver. So right off the bat, it's obvious HE survives the coming ordeal. The chapters switch perspectives between Tarver and Lilac, but as they are almost always together, the storyline continues seamlessly. It was in first person present tense, which can annoy me unless it's written really well ... here it was, so it didn't bother me, as it normally does.
There were a few "oh" moments in the story, where the unfolding events really got to me! I really wasn't sure how it was going to end. From a parental perspective ... there was some sexual activity, although nothing at all descriptive (almost easy to miss, some . No profanity (okay ... the characters do swear, but we the reader don't know what they have said).
Hmmm... I'm going to remember this story fondly. I'm even thinking I'll buy the sequels, I want more! There is a free novella too ...
