”Sober Cal is a dream. He is  witty, charming, and neatly impossible to resist. It’s the drunk version of himself that I have a hard time accepting. That version is depressing, angry, and extremely difficult to love.”

Callahan ”Cal”  Kane is the middle child of the Kane brothers. Callahan is the sunshine, former hockey player, who has for the last years been an addict. Cal’s letter from his grandfather makes him return to the place the brothers used to spend their summers. Where, unknown to him, his ex-girlfriend now lives. Wanting to come back into her life - and Cami’s - he has to prove himself and limit himself with his addiction.

Alana ”Lana”  Castillo is Callahan’s former girlfriend, and the mother of 5-year-old Cami. It’s been six years since she last saw Cal, and a day hasn’t gone by where she hasn’t missed him. Having been around an addict before Lana is reluctant to let Cal into her life again, however with having no choice in the matter she does. However, she makes stipulations about Cal’s drinking and being in her and Cami’s life, and he doesn’t like what he’s hearing about himself.

Cal is what we call a ”functioning addict”. He is able to ”live”, and have conversations and live a life while high or drunk. As someone who has dealt with alcoholism in their family I think Cal was a great character. He showed the hardship and that just quitting isn’t that easy. I also think that Lana’s weariness around Cal is understandable, and while she does sometimes jump to conclusions that doesn’t paint Cal in the best light, she is a great representative of a person who loves someone who is an addict. The trust gets broken down, and it’s hard to get back - especially if you have been given more than three, or four, or five chances.
