I have never before had the experience of reading a short story collection in which I absolutely loved every piece. I guess if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the title novella, but I truly would give 5⭐s to each piece individually, and the book as a whole. All of the short stories and the novella in this collection are contemporary, but they feel so magical that you almost wonder if there's going to be a fantastical twist around each corner. Danielle Evans tackles hard hitting topics with the most beautiful prose and the most unflinching honesty. She weaves seemingly random background elements together in a way that brings each story fully to life within the constraints of the medium. I wouldn't hesitate to say that this may be my favorite short story collection ever. What a way to start off 2021.
