Ruth conveys the nature of her childhood and life in the dormitory with a deft touch of sweet childhood joy amongst the thorny brushes of neglect, abuse and institutional racism. 

Her strength is a testament to her spirit and the need for that strength is more evidence of how horrendous the ongoing colonization of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders is.
